The James Foundation has generously awarded a $5 million, multi-year grant to Questa Education Foundation to advance Questa’s goal of doubling the number of students it serves by 2030. This transformational investment will expand access to postsecondary education for local students, opening doors to career opportunities and strengthening northeast Indiana’s future workforce.
“We are deeply grateful for The James Foundation’s leadership, vision, and confidence in our mission,” said Elizabeth Bushnell, president and CEO of Questa Education Foundation. “A gift of this magnitude is truly transformative—it will change the trajectory of hundreds of students’ lives while accelerating the talent development our region urgently needs.”
The James Foundation’s investment comes at a critical moment. By 2031, an estimated 72% of jobs will require a postsecondary credential, yet only 34% of northeast Indiana residents currently hold one, contributing to a growing talent shortage. Even as employers report increasing demand for skilled workers with certificates and degrees, enrollment in education and training beyond high school has fallen to a 10-year low in Indiana.
Cost remains the number one barrier to enrollment, compounded by the complexity of navigating financial aid. Without adequate financial support and guidance, nearly half of high school graduates are opting out of further education altogether.
Through its nationally distinctive forgivable loan program, Questa removes financial barriers while incentivizing graduates to live and work in northeast Indiana. Over 85% of Questa Scholars graduate—compared to a national average of 60%—and a remarkable 82% of Questa graduates remain in the region, contributing to the local workforce and economy.
Despite strong outcomes and steady growth, Questa continues to receive twice as many qualified applications as it can currently fund. “This grant is a powerful catalyst for our goal to double the number of students we serve, but it also highlights the continued need for community investment,” Bushnell said. “We are proud to partner with The James Foundation to inspire additional support. Every contribution—no matter the size—helps more students access education, complete their credentials, and build their futures right here at home.”
A portion of the grant will support giving challenges designed to encourage individual and organizational donations, amplifying the impact of The James Foundation’s investment.
“Education and talent development are central to our mission,” shared Vicki and Rick James, founders of The James Foundation. “We believe in Questa’s innovative approach and proven results. We hope this investment inspires others to join us in supporting students and strengthening our region through education.”
